Being and Doing
“Every relationship that excludes God becomes oppressive.” – Eugene Peterson
God’s mission, which he calls all of us into, is nothing less than reconciling all things to Himself through Jesus (Colossians 1, 2 Corinthians 5). Faith in Jesus is very personal, but never private. God is King over all aspects of life, including our families, households, places of employment, hobbies, and the public square.
As those learning the ways of the Kingdom, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). We witness to the hope we have with courage, gentleness, and respect (1 Peter 3:15 ), never in a coercive way that uses force to make Jesus King in others’ lives (John 6:15).
The word Neighbor can be thought of in a three-fold fashion…
A neighbor is a person, not a project, with whom we interact. In the flow of life, we don’t always get to choose with whom we share the common grace of humanity.
We are to be a neighbor, likewise a person, not a religious machine with no feelings or flaws.
To neighbor provides momentum for our love, expanding from noun to verb, from passive to active, as we seek the welfare of those around us in light of the Gospel.
A few of the practical ways we discover and care for our neighborhood and city are through trash clean-up and workdays, art walk and parade participation, caroling and community worship nights.

Soon—and it will not be very long—the forests of Lebanon will become a fertile field, and the fertile field will yield bountiful crops.
In that day the deaf will hear words read from a book, and the blind will see through the gloom and darkness.
The humble will be filled with fresh joy from the Lord. The poor will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
